Hi, my name is Agnieszka, I come from Poland and at the moment I am doing a PhD in molecular biology at EMBL in Grenoble, France.

I have decided to choose a career in science because I liked the more "scientific" subjects already when I was at school. After high school I was studying biotechnology at the university and I became very interested in molecular biology. And I chose Grenoble to do my PhD because it's a beautiful city in the middle of the Alps where I can do a lot of outdoor activities and I have an opportunity to improve my French!

My laboratory is not very big - we are around 80 people, but it's located very close to other big scientific institutes, so there is a very dynamic and international atmosphere here which I enjoy very much. The kind of work we do in our lab is a specific branch of molecular biology: it is called structural biology because we are trying do define the atomic structure of biological particles (proteins and protein complexes) in order to better understand their functions in the cells. There are several groups in the lab: the group I'm working with is especially interested in proteins which interact with the DNA in the cell nucleus and control the activity of genes.

In the lab I'm quite independent: I have to plan my work myself and design the experiments I want to perform. What I enjoy most about this job is doing things I am really interested in and which I think are very important, travelling, learning new things and interacting with people from all over the world, who are not only great scientists but also very open minded and enthusiastic about science.
