Hege Hansbakk Huuse (Norway)
| Hi,
my name is Hege Hansbakk Huuse, I am 29 years old and from Trondheim, Norway.
The last three years I have been working at CERN - one of the world's largest research centers in the field of physics. Here we try to find out what the smallest building stones of the universe are composed of. |

When I went to school, my interest for science and mathematics joggled heavily but I ended up enjoying it and even finding it fun. Especially physics became one of my favourites, even though I had a hard time understanding it. That is funny to think about now that I am actually working at CERN.
What kind of profession to choose was another thing I had a hard time deciding. I didn't make up my mind until the last year in school. Luckily I had chosen the correct combination of subjects before which gave me plenty of possibilities when choosing what to study at the university. For me the choices were becoming a medical doctor or studying computer science, two pretty different fields... I chose the last one and got a Master of Science degree in computer science. I have never regretted this choice because such a background gives me many further possibilities, interesting tasks and flexible working hours.
At CERN my main task is to manage software licences. A software licence contains information about the legal aspects of using an application. Because CERN is an international organisation based in Geneva, situated on the border between France and Switzerland, we have two official languages - French and English. However, a chaos of different languages is spoken in the hallways. In my department there are people from Norway, Poland, England, France, Belgium and Spain. When I get to work in the morning there are therefore many variants of 'Hello' and 'Good morning'.

A typical working day for me starts at 8.30 am and lasts until 5.30 pm including one hour lunch break. I share office with a nice Frenchman and quite a lot of my time is spent at the office. During the day I create software applications and web pages for the IT-department. Sometimes I attend meetings about the projects I am working on and sometimes I participate in conferences and courses in other countries. Of course I also have to report and present what I am doing to the others. Additionally I am responsible for making sure that the computers in our computer center run as they are supposed to. Our computer center consists of two big rooms containing almost 3000 computers. Luckily I am not responsible for all of them.
In my spare time I play handball, go hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter. Geneva is close to the Alps, which makes it easy for me and my friends to enjoy the mountains. Geneva is also centrally located in Europe so that we can easily travel around and visit new places.
