On the 4 and 9 April 2008, I visited the "E. Majorana" high school in Monterusciello, in the province of Naples. My visit was aimed at encouraging the senior students at the school to consider studying science at the university and following careers in scientific fields. The message was directed particularly at girls and young women, stimulating them to believe in themselves and realize their ambitions.

To achieve this goal, I showed the fascinating world of particle physics to a selected group of final-year students. The students were taken for a virtual tour of one of the biggest particle detectors in the world, the CMS detector at CERN. Not only did I explain the physics behind the construction of such a machine, but I also underlined the practical difficulties in its realisation. I stressed that particle physics is emerging as one of the most promising fields for research and development, generating high-performance products.
The response was very positive, and a question and answer session took place after the presentation.
