Myths and facts - Causes of female under-representation in science
We all know that women are under-represented in science, and we think we know why:
- In the past the pool of available women has been too small
- Promotion prospects for women are bad
- Women have to reconcile motherhood and science
But do we really know?
The main message of this talk is to critically reflect some widespread and partially misleading assumptions of the causes of the female marginalization in science.
By presenting internal as well as structural barriers to women in science, the talk will show that we may have to reconsider some of our beliefs and assumptions in order to attract women to science and keep them there.
